Summary

“Misplaced Childhood” by Marillion scores 98 out of 100 based on this comprehensive evaluation. The album excels in sales, chart success, musical ability, lyrics, melody, emotion, coherence, production, effort, and authenticity. It remains a landmark album in Marillion’s career and a quintessential example of neo-progressive rock, standing the test of time and continuing to resonate with fans old and new.

Now, I’m not a Maths boy, but even I could tell something went wrong with that score. Three categories scored a 4, so I’m not sure how that equates to 98. Indeed, I had to get GPT to check two more times before it admitted it had miscalculated. That means there’s a chance it got the previous albums wrong too – feel free to go back and check yourself. Even so – 97 is a whopping score. I certainly would have dipped some of those 5s to 4s, but maybe GPT knows better than me. I mean, it struggled with a simple calculation, so who knows?

I can’t see how any other Marillion album is going to improve upon or equal that score. Out of curiosity, I asked the tool if it was possible to review the album negatively, using the same system. Naturally, it could, and it re-reviewed the album, coming out with a score of 72. I won’t paste the whole thing, but here’s the summary:

In this negative review, “Misplaced Childhood” by Marillion scores 72 out of 100. While the album has undeniable strengths in sales and chart success, it falls short in areas such as originality, relatability, and coherence for some listeners. The lyrics and themes can be perceived as overly complex or pretentious, and the album’s ambitious scope may come across as disjointed or melodramatic. Additionally, Fish’s distinctive vocal style and the polished production can be polarizing. Despite these criticisms, the album remains a significant work within the neo-progressive rock genre.

So what can we do with this? Should I refine my prompt when asking for reviews? I assumed that by simply asking it to review the album, it would work through all the positives and negatives and give a measured, holistic review. For whatever reason, the tool is either a Marillion fan, is naturally overly positive, or wants to placate fans who would ask it such silly questions.

With all of this, you’d think I’d quit while I’m not too far behind. But you’d be wrong. I shall continue with this nonsense until we’ve covered all of the Marillion albums. Forgiveness, please.

Tell it like it is!
